Visit Abukumado Cave

A mysterious and impressive underground fantasy
This over 600 meters long, beautiful cave is filled with stalactites formed over the course of more than 80 million years. An aquarium exhibiting approximately 130,000 creatures belonging to 800 different species. Start the Michinoku Shiokaze Trail

Walk around the country side and ocean, experiencing nature.
An extensive trail stretching over 900km that connects the Pacific Ocean coastline from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture to Soma in Fukushima Prefecture. In Fukushima is a route designed to take you from the "minka" private houses and shrines of Shinchi, through Mt. Karozan, around the historical landmarks of Soma and finally to Matsukawa-ura Bay. Matsukawaura Environmental Park

Think about the environment while being relaxed by nature.
A park created to put on display the wonderful nature of Matsukawaura and to foster people's minds to take care of their environment. Though the park suffered massive damage from the tsunami of The Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, it recovered and reopened in July of 2012. In the 5,000 square meter park, you can find chainsaw art, totem poles, and 'Furusato Soma Song Monuments' that begin to sing by sensor when people approach them.

Matsukawaura's gourmet event which aims to revitalize tourism following the Great East Japan Earthquake. With a theme based on seasonal flavors, around 10 Japanese inns and restaurants have volunteered to come together and serve the unique dishes of Matsukawaura such as rice bowls and meal sets. This event is held irregularly as the volunteers hope to offer new menus every time so that even those who come back can enjoy something new.

Tour the Soma City Densho Chinkon Kinenkan

The original landscape of the coast of Soma to the future
Ohama, Haragama, and Isobe, located in the City of Soma, were heavily damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This facility includes exhibits such as scenes from the various regions prior to the earthquake, photographs of traditional rituals, and documented footage taken immediately after the earthquake struck. As well as showing the original landscape of 3 areas both inside and outside, it is considered to be a support for the hearts of those families who have lost loved ones and message to future generations of the threat of earthquakes and the lessons learned from it.

The Land of Sasakamaboko, Sasakama-kan making bamboo-leaf-shaped fish cake

Experience what it's like to make bamboo kamaboko at Sasakama-kan managed by "Kanezaki", one of the companies which makes and sells Sasakamaboko. Mold fish paste by hand, stick it on a skewer, shape it, and cook for about 10 minutes. It will take about 45 minutes in total. Staff will teach you how to shape the kamaboko, as well as show you how to cook it. They will also explain everyone on the history of Sasakamaboko.

Listen to stories from Natori and Yuriage storytellers

See disaster-stricken areas and increase knowledge of disaster prevention
Yuriage, an area located in Natori which was seriously damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Here participants can see the records of the earthquake and tsunami damage as well as the areas carrying out reconstruction. With the “Yuriage-Shinsai-wo-Tsutaeru-Kai,” a group which passes on the stories of the earthquake in Yuriage, you can make a reservation with a volunteer guide who will talk you about the damage (due to the continuous reconstruction, the places viewed may change).

Visit Maple Hall

Canada-Tohoku Friendship Pavilion
Located in Yuriage Port Morning Market, the Maple Hall was established by the Canadian government to assist with restoration after the Great Earthquake of 2011. Goods from the morning market and also lots of handicrafts made by the residents of temporary housing, are sold at this hall which functions as a place for local residents to help themselves and help each other. We also have exhibits which show the scenes of Yuriage before the earthquake, as well as sections to help educate people on the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Sendai Castle Site

Date Masamune's statue watches over the town
The castle ruins of Date Masamune, one of the Sengoku feudal lords that ruled over Sendai 400 years ago. The castle itself no longer remains, but the stone wall which have been carefully reconstructed helps to preserve those ancient times. A statue of Date Masamune riding a horse stands in the inner citadel ruins where you can catch the perfect view of the stores and houses located in Sendai's city center. Use Sendai's tourist city loop bus, “Loople Sendai,” as a convenient way to get around.

Take the Sendai City Subway to Arai Station

A convenient means of transportation in the city
If you need to get around Sendai City, we recommend using the City Subway Nanboku Line and Tozai Line from JR Sendai Station. Using the newly established (2015) Tozai line, you can travel from Japan's highest elevation station, Yagiyama Zoological Park station, all the way to the eastern coast terminal station of Arai. For those going to Sendai Castle Site or the Sendai City Museum, the Sendai International Center station is perfect for you. All day passes are available.

Memories of the earthquake - to the future, to the world
In addition to being a location to learn about the Great East Japan Earthquake, it also acts as an entrance to the eastern coastal region of Sendai which was hit hard by the tsunami. Tour the Earthquake Ruins Sendai Arahama Elementary School

Its appearance left untouched from the damage
Arahama Elementary School, the site which children, teaching staff and local residents fled to at the time of the earthquake and was hit by the tsunami up to the 2nd floor was reopened as a remnant of the earthquake disaster. Photographs and footage are displayed inside the school which show the progress of events from the time the earthquake occurred, evacuation, when the tsunami hit, to the time of rescue, demonstrating the terrible power and threat of the tsunami. Even now, visitors can view the restoration and reconstruction taking place from the roof of the school.
