The Michinoku Shiokaze Trail is a trail course approximately 700km long that connects the Pacific coastline from Soma City in Fukushima to Hachinohe City located in Aomori. With Fudai as a base, this course leading you along the coastline for two days also called the "Alps of the sea" with its continuous palisades will bring out your adventurous spirit, and allow you to enjoy the changing landscape of the Kurosaki Cliffs and Kitayamazaki Cliffs located in Sanriku Zuichi created by Mother Nature.

Fudai Suimon Water Gate

Tohoku's largest flood gate standing at 15.5m. Thanks to this flood gate, the town's center managed to evade any flooding from the tsunami, and completely avoided losses of houses as well as lives.

Nedarihama Beach

Walking the trails under the cliffs while listening to the sound of the waves, Nedarihama Beach Nature Trail is the highlight of "Michinokoku Shiokaze Trail".

Kurosaki Observation Area

Kurosaki is a beautiful scenic spot located on a latitude 40 degrees north. At top of the cliffs is one of the 50 Japanese lighthouses called "Rikuchu Kurosaki Lighthouse". You can overlook the Pacific Ocean from the public bath in Kokumin Syukusha Kurosaki Inn.

Anmoura no Taki Falls

A rare waterfall which flows directly into the sea from a cliff with a 150m drop.

Kitayamazaki Cliffs Lookout

Called the most magnificent coastline in Japan!
A dynamic coastline composed of 200m palisades, large and small strange rock formations formed through erosion caused by harsh waves, oddly-shaped stones and caves that stretch approximately 8km. It possesses beauty that can be seen not only during sunny days with clear skies but even on days with rainy weather, creating a scenic view with palisades shrouded in a haze that takes your breath away. The 736 steps stairway from the observation area to the bottom of the cliffs allows you to reach the beach at the bottom.

Kitayamazaki Cliffs Visitor Center

Learn what makes Kitayamazaki Cliffs great!
The Visitor Center is immediately next to the observation area at Kitayamazaki Cliffs and allows you to get a completely unhindered view of the Pacific Ocean from a wooden deck. In addition to films which discuss the four seasons of Kitayamazaki Cliffs, there is also a display of the plants and animals which inhabit the area. On top of getting a chance to experience making straps, picture stands and candles which use shells, visitors can make reservations to enjoy guided tours, small fishing boats and nature guided tours (additional fee).

Tsukue Banya Group

Experience fishing culture from long ago!
A group of 23 wooden lodges ("Banya") constructed in a line at the inlet of Tsukue Beach. These lodges were used long ago as a place of work as well as a location to store fishing equipment, and chosen to be one of the “A selection of 100 historical and cultural heritage sites and heirlooms related to fisheries and fishing villages which would like to hand down to future generations.” It was washed away and destroyed due to the giant tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster but was rebuilt, and in some of the lodges visitors can enjoy a Banya tour, experience making salt as well as cuisine from this area. All activities require a reservation.

The Michinoku Shiokaze Trail is a trail course approximately 700km long that connects the Pacific coastline from Soma City in Fukushima to Hachinohe City located in Aomori. On this course which goes around Jodogahama Beach's picturesque scenery representative of Sanriku, you can enjoy a leisurely walk with the sea breeze blowing across your face while soaking in the beautiful view that paints a contrast with its green pine trees, white rocky surfaces and ultramarine sea.

Walk around Jodogahama

A beautiful coast as beautiful as Amida paradise
A picturesque scenery that represents Miyako. Its name comes from a Priest Reikyo, a Buddhist priest who lived during the Edo period who said “It's just like Amida paradise.” Sharply-pointed white rhyolite huddled together, the green pine trees, the white color of the rocky surface and the ultramarine color of the ocean creates a beautiful contrast. This changes with the seasons and in the winter you can see the landscape covered in blankets of snow.

Spouting Hole

Waves shoot up 30m high!
Boasted as one of the largest spouting holes nation-wide. The hole which was created by erosion causes water to shoot up above ground when the crashing waves hitting the shore. You cannot see the tide shooting up when the waves are gentle, but it can reach as high as 30m during times of intense waves and Tohoku's winds are strong.

Tsunami Memorial Park NAKANOHAMA
